The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau of the Republic of Latvia (The Bureau) is the leading authority on anti-corruption in Latvia. Its aim is to fight corruption in a coordinated and comprehensive manner through prevention, investigation and education. The Bureau was created in October of 2002 as an independent institution of public administration under the supervision of the Cabinet of Ministers. This supervision is exercised by the Prime Minister and is limited to regulating the lawfulness of decisions. The Bureau is also a pre-trial investigative body and has traditional policing capabilities. The Bureau’s personnel are composed of investigators, operational staff, officials performing the regulation of public officials’ activities and control over financing of political parties. The Bureau’s personnel also consist of policy planning specialists and other specialists of administrative functions.
